Sleep – It’s Body Repair Time Series: Part 3 (What is the correct quantum of sleep)

(In the last article, we knew about how GOPTA can be used to improve sleep patterns. Today, we will know what is the correct quantum of sleep.)

What is the correct quantum of sleep?

It is the most common question asked to me in my workshops. People want to know what is the correct quantum of sleep and whether they are sleeping less or more than the number of hours required for sleep.

My answer is that it varies from person to person. As I already said sleeping period is to refurbish the body & mind to get ready for upcoming day. When sleeping period is ‘body repair time’, it is obvious that the need of sleep will vary according to the condition of the body & brain at the time when you go to sleep. Even for the same person, this need may slightly vary from one night to another.

It has been a big misnomer developed over a period of time that at least 8 hours’ sleep is necessary for a normal human being. Sleep requirement varies from person to person. I have seen various people taking only 4-5 hours’ sleep and still doing great works. And here I am not talking about just yogis, I am talking about working people as well.

Take the example of our beloved Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji. He sleeps for just about 4 hours or so and always look fresh & energetic for the remaining period of time despite lots of travelling & meetings. As per my knowledge, during his first tenure as Prime Minister of India, he did not take any single leave which means that he can work on all 7 days of a week, that too over a sufficiently long period of time without any signs of any fatigue on his body & mind. His body is always energetic and his mind produces iron-willed decisions.

I would say that if you look around, you will find that on an average people take 7-9 hours sleep and 8 hours seems to be just an average number of hours, for which a normal human being sleeps.

You have inhibited this belief since your early childhood from your parents, who always told you to sleep early in the night. Over a period of time, you have developed the habit of sleeping at a fixed time in the night, say at 10 or 11 PM and rise in the morning at about 6 or 7 AM. Thus, since childhood, your average sleep time was in the range of 8 hours or so. You must have seen various people, who sleep 8 or 9 hours during the night, still they always look tired, drowsy and keep on yawning whole day. They think that sleeping extra is solution to their problem, but they don’t understand that excessive sleep itself is a big enemy of quality sleep. For example, if you sleep for 8 hours, try out sleeping for 10 hours a day. Within 3 days, you will feel that your quality of sleep has decreased.
